"The benefit of writing is to build a space in which other people can think." Ed Schlossberg, Author, Educator "According to a variety of studies, people's greatest fear is public speaking. The next is dying. Does that sound true? That means to the normal everyday person, if you show up at a funeral, you're better off expired than delivering the eulogy." John Steinbeck, Novelist If you are writing or speaking in public, powerful communication begins and ends with the what -- the content. The how will come easier. Once writing training and presentation skills training assist you in gaining success (and you will have confidence because you'll be a trained pro) you'll have no issues writing or speaking in public. In order to accomplish that, aided by writing training, keep in mind the three pillars of effective communication, written or spoken: Writing exercises the mind. Compared to an unplanned conversation, writing -- whether a presentation to a client or a report for the shareholders or a sales proposal -- furnishes you the time to show how smart you are. Know your audience and your readers. Are they advanced or beginners? Are they experts? Do they want to be amused or trained or persuaded? What do you want them to take away from your report? Edit and revise and, in the case of delivering presentation skills training, practice. If you do not check your work with care before hitting the "send" button, or rehearse the details and delivery of your presentation, you risk looking careless and unprofessional. It's called QC (quality control), without which excellent communication is nearly impossible. Dave Griffiths, Media Relations Trainer
