What's Behind Lace Front Wigs?

By: Jessie Hofmeister

A custom-made lace front wig is a wig with lace mesh attached in the front. Custom-made wigs of this nature have hair that is pulled through the mesh to give the appearance of a true hairline. Unlike regular wigs, lace front wigs can be worn with hair pulled back from the forehead. They are more realistic but in order to completely cover the line, sometimes it is necessary to use makeup.

Lace front wigs are used by celebrities who are on camera or who perform on stage in front of audiences where they are not face-to-face with those who see them. Musicians, singers, actors and models all use lace front wigs when they want a different style without doing something to their actual hair.

These kinds of wigs do not come cheaply. A decent lace front will cost you anywhere from $2,000 to $6,000. You do not have to go to a salon, as they are fairly easy to attach on your own. You can even cover up any signs that you are wearing a wig by using your imagination and a little "know-how".

Once you have done it a couple of times, putting your lace front wig on will not take you long at all and should get much easier.

2 Methods for Attaching Wigs with Lace Fronts

1. Use liquid adhesive (the type that is safe for human use) - Put the front lace back by an inch or so, and then apply the adhesive so that it disappears into the front of the lace. Place the wig over this and it should appear as though the hair is naturally growing out from your scalp.

2. Use double-sided tape - This method is more involved than the liquid adhesive. After cutting the tape into lengths of three inches and widths of just under four inches, take one strip and place it on the patched area where the lace front attaches on one side of your head. With the strip on the hairline in front and touching the lace's edge, press it down. Lay each strip end to end in the same manner until the entire front edge is covered and remember to press each one down as you apply it. The last strip attaches to the polyurethane near the lace front on the far side of where you began. Make sure there are not any open areas before you pull the wig down over the tape.

Applying the lace front wig with adhesive or tape makes it possible to style the hair without constantly having to move it back to its original position and the adhesive helps the wig to lie flat, making it appear much more like your real hair.

While this looks quite natural, if someone is looking closely when you lift your forehead expressively, he or she will notice a difference. If this concerns you, try wearing a cloth headband over the edge of your hairline. Makeup can also be blended over the skin and lace mesh but this can be a tricky task and is not recommended for daytime outings.
