What Makes a Good Algarve Golf Course Design

By: Jonathan Walker - Big Blue Tomato

If you were a golf course designer, and you were given a golf course for every time someone asked you if you could tell them what makes a golf course great, then you would not need to design golf courses ever again. The answer to the question though, is the ground on which the golf course is built.

A good golf course specifically needs to be set in rolling hills, and it also needs to be subject to a couple of nice ponds, for water hazards. It should have plenty of spaces for the fairways, and also for the bunkers. It should have some rough ground and a load of trees. Do you know that there are actually people out there that will argue against there being bunkers in golf? How ridiculous!

No one wants to play a golf course that suffers from a lack of variety. It is things like that which give the course a bad name. Every golfer wants each hole to have its own nuances, and to pose them with a fresh challenge. You should not be able to see the flag from the tee box unless the hole is a par 3.

Some courses have elevated tee boxes which is apparently to aid golfers in getting elevation on their drives, but this is debatable as modern technology means that golfers do not really need help with this. It is probably due to the landscape.

The various folk that have jobs on golf courses have an important role to play in making sure that a golf course is good. Really good people are often brought in for the purpose of keeping fairways smooth, and cropping greens to their potential. To the individual playing the game, such maintenance is the difference between a green being good and a green being bad. This is the case with golf worldwide.

To elaborate on greens, a factor that is instrumental in making a course good, is the grass that has been used for its greens. Courses that are brilliant use bent grass. Bent grass is amazing because it has been genetically engineered to stop the ball from rolling off the green. Another grass that is alright but not as good, is the Bermuda grass that courses use, which does not have the same quality of keeping the ball on the green. Another difference is that bent grass grows on softer soil, meaning deeper divots.

The overall attitude and approach of the clubhouse staff can dictate how good a golf course is. This is very much from the point of view of the golfers that play the course. Poor attitude from personnel can cause the golfers to have problems in terms of focussing on their games. Being mistreated by some priggish, blazer wielding microcosm, is enough to anger anyone. Pleasant staff equal salubrious times all round.

The level of maintenance that golf cart paths receive is really important. If a path becomes rough, then the people in the carts will be forced on the fairways, and that is not good.

Rough terrain is something that is going to cause a golf course to be bad. Some have rocks everywhere, imbedded in the soil, so this can cause damage to clubs, and also causes the ball to react differently. A golfer with clubs as battered as his scoring pencil is unlikely to want to return.
