Using Animals as Medicine

By: Sam McKenzy

For literally thousands of years, natives of Australia have been using the oil of emu birds. When cooked down, it contains certain acids that make it extremely penetrable to human skin. Emu oil was originally used to treat bruises, burns, and other wounds by aborigines of the outback; in more recent years, though, it has been added to beauty products to help fight against dry skin, cracked skin, and aging skin. Emu fat is slowly becoming an extremely versatile substance.

Emu oil has recently been discovered to have medicinal value as well. When mixed with other chemicals and organic products, it can aid in pain-relief, collagen re-growth, acne treatments, eczema treatments, and even hair loss. One other major usage for emu oil that has recently been discovered is the treatment of radiation burns. With more and more radiation with the advent of cell phones and electronics showing up everywhere, maybe emu oil can help. So while it may be unfortunate that so many birds are being destroyed, it's also good to know that a very good use is coming from them.

There are also a lot more strict laws surrounding the emu bird because they're an endangered species. So that means that living conditions in emu farms is much better than that of other species of similar fates.

There are actually lots of animals with medicinal value in some forms. While the oil of emu has been researched for thousands of years, animals such as sharks are just now more recently being researched. With sharks, they've found that they have a very special means of healing. Sharks don't get sick. They don't get colds or cancer and they can even heal and re-grow organs on their own.

In the future, sharks will probably be developed further. Some scientists believe they are the key to curing many deadly diseases. Other scientists are doubtful that sharks will be able to cure everything, but admit that it's likely they'll be able to cure the common cold. It's a very interesting thing, though. And what will happen when we're able to cure any disease? What about over-population?

Humans are also being studied more thoroughly. The use of stem cells and nanotechnology will grow beyond our wildest imaginations. Have a heart attack? Grow a new heart from your own tissue with tiny robots that you take in a pill.

Or maybe when you get sick, you'll just eat some shark meat with some wine and feel better instantly. Sore throats will be a thing of the past; the future will be an amazing place.

So, overall, there are going to be all sorts of advances in science. It's amazing how many things have gone un-researched for so long and even more amazing at how long we've been using some of these things. With the ancient natives of Australia melting down bird fat, to the scientists of tomorrow using genetically modified stem cells of sharks to cure the common cold, our world is evolving more rapidly now than it ever has before.
