Two Tips to a Good Credit Score

By: Justin Hutto

The best tip to achieve a good credit score is to pay your bills on time. If you have bad credit items on your report that is fine, however make sure to pay this month and all future bills on time.
Doing this will show a positive payment history on your credit. A positive payment history means almost as much as bad credit items, when your credit score is being determined.
The more time that passes between today and the last time you paid late, had an account charged off, or any negative mark the better. So even with bad items on your credit report it is still of the utmost importance that you pay these months bills on time and continue too.
Another tip equally important is to remove any inaccurate or unverifiable items. Our credit system is far from perfect and when mistakes are made your credit will pay the price.
You can end up with bad marks on your credit due to a divorce. Where your ex-spouse defaulted on a loan, even if the divorce judge ordered you ex-spouse to pay that debt, it will still be reported on your credit too.
You can also have bad credit due to a lender mistake. It happens all the time, where the amount due changes and due to a mistake on the lenders side you are never notified and keep making your regular payments. Yet the whole time your credit is being ruined with derogatory marks.
If you identity is stolen this can be devastating to your credit. Another common source of inaccurate information is credit reporting errors. Thus you need to keep an eye on your credit report if you have a 500 credit score or a 700 score.
All of these listings are inaccurate and will bring your score down. You should dispute them all and have them removed.
The Fair Credit Reporting Act was passed and is continually amended by congress to help protect your rights. These negative marks are beyond your control and the FCRA was passed for these circumstances.
In order to file a dispute, a dispute letter must be sent to each credit bureau that reports the inaccurate mark. Then the credit bureaus will conduct an investigation and if the listing is found to be inaccurate or unverifiable it will be removed.
Credit bureaus will often respond to a dispute letter by asking for more information. If you have many negative marks then I suggest hiring a credit repair service.
