Tips for working with a Life Coach

By: Jeanette Meierhofer CFLC

Over the years, I have been both the coach and the client. In both roles, I've found some strategies that helped me and my clients get the most out of being coached. Follow a few of these simple rules and you'll find your growth excel beyond your wildest dreams.
*Let go of your expectations
Most of us are so focused on what should happen that we neglect to see what is naturally happening. If you can let go of your expectations, you'll find yourself amazed at the results you're getting. Trust that whatever happens is for your greater good. Release the idea that if you do this then that will happen. All you are ever in charge of is doing the work.
*Acknowledge the growth you are experiencing.
Trust in the fact that all growth is good growth. The goal you have set for yourself may be minor compared to the goal your heart and soul have in mind for you. The day to day things that challenge you are vital and usually connected to the goals you want to achieve. Allow yourself to process with your personal life coach whatever is coming up for you, I guarantee it is a stepping stone in a positive direction.
*Do what is asked of you
Admittedly I'm a bit ambitious when it comes to my own personal growth, so when I was coached, I did my homework and I did it as thoroughly as possible. I have clients who do the same and they reach their goals a lot quicker than the clients who don't do the work at all. If you are challenged by the homework you are assigned, bring it up with your coach. This is a great opportunity to discover what's behind those challenges and to find tools to overcome them. Put into your coaching what you want to get out of it.
*Come to your sessions focused and ready
Would you rather be focused and attentive and reach your goals in 10 sessions with a coach or would you rather pay a coach for 20 sessions because you are distracted during your time together? It's your money. It's your time. It's your life. What's important to you? Would you like to reach your goals quickly or take your time? What are the benefits of being fully present in your life?
