Tips for Safety When Pedaling with a Child on an Adult's Bike

By: Tim Levin

Pedaling a bike with a child is a great adventure that both grown-ups and infants will love. When taking a infant on a bike, as they are too small to pedal on their own, there is an higher chance of injury because riding with a infant as a rear passenger on an parent's bike makes the cycle unstable. Therefore, it is preferred that infant is carried in a front-mounted baby cycle carrier.
The remembering these useful guidelines below to avoid an avoidable risk of injury:
1. Only adult riders should ride with young passengers.
2. Ideally pedal with passengers in parks, on cycle tracks, or on quiet streets. Avoid traffic heavy main roads and bad weather, and ride with maximum caution and at a slow speed.
3. In America infants younger than 1 year are too young to ride on a cycle carrier and must not be transported on a bike. Do not carry infants in backpacks or slings on a cycle.
4. Toddlers who are old enough (12 months to 4 years) to sit well unsupported and whose necks are strong enough to carry a lightweight helmet may be carried in rear-mounted seat or better yet a center mounted carrier.
5. A toddler bicycle carrier must;
* Be firmly attached to the cycle.
* Be engineered to stop feet and hands from being trapped in the wheels.
* Have a strong chest harness and lap strap that will cradle a tired toddler.
* A lightweight baby cycle helmet should always be worn to stop or minimize head injury.
6. The child should be fitted into the cycle seat with a sturdy strap.
7. Remember, the risk of serious accident still exists when you ride with a little one on your bike.
