Tips For Holiday Spending

By: Robert Bain..

We have all seen those holiday shoppers with a smile on their face and packages in hand. Others seem very strained by the whole process, and that is often due to the financial cost of holiday shopping. For those that have a budget that doesn't leave very much money left over, it can be an uncomfortable time of year. There are plenty of things you can do though to prepare for holiday shopping.

Since we know it is an expense that is going to roll around every year, why not plan for it all year long? Take a small amount of money each month such as $25 or $30 and place it in a savings account. Some banks offer accounts specifically for holiday shopping so make sure you ask about them. The money you save up can be accessed as the holiday season approaches and you won't have to worry about coming up with too much cash at that time.

You can also keep your eyes out for great deals on holiday gifts all year long. My daughter loves dolls and I pick them up when I see them on sale. My boys really like video games and I often find them on sale as well. There are plenty of other items you will find on sale too including items for the home, jewelry and clothing. Watch for stores going out of business and even the after Christmas sales for some great deals.

If you have some particular gifts you really need to get for your children or others, you want to take the time to compare prices. Many retailers have huge sales the day after Thanksgiving. You can also find great prices online, and many sites will offer you free shipping around the holidays to entice you to make purchases from them.

One of the biggest blunders that people make when it comes to holiday spending is relying on plastic to cover the cost. It is very easy to pull that card out at the checkout and slide it through the machine. It is much harder to grasp those credit card bills when they come in though. You may find you are overwhelmed by the cost of the payments as well as the interest. If you make only the minimum payments, your balance is going to take a very long time to reduce.

It helps if you make efforts to cut down on your holiday shopping list as well. It can be difficult to buy for a large family or your circle of friends. Try to work it out that you won't get them gifts and they won't get you anything. You can draw names when it comes to nieces and nephews. Chances are the entire family will really like the idea of this as it is going to save them money too. Talk to your friends and make a pact not to purchase holiday gifts for each other.

For those that are still on your holiday shopping list, you need to carefully consider what you can afford for them. A great way to save money is to make something at home to give to them. You can give them your time too instead of a gift that has monetary value associated with it. Baked goods are often welcomed by most people as well.

If you take the time to prepare for holiday shopping, it doesn't have to be a stressful time for you. Knowing how much money you have to work with, who you need to shop for, and the best place to get it for a reasonable price will help you tremendously. You can be one of those happy holiday shoppers out there. You can enjoy the holiday season without putting any strain on your financial well being.
