You will have acquired many habits and ways of life which are no longer going to be acceptable in the workplace. The time has come for change and no, it’s not going to be easy. However, it has to be done and I have formulated a few ideas which may help you to adapt to the new life you will shortly be leading. You are now going to be having to present yourself with a whole new image, and this has to be one which projects an air of professionalism and efficiency. At the graduate recruitment process your interviewers will be accessing your appearance as well as your qualifications and skills so remember this when attending that important interview. You need to give a good impression as there will be a lot of competition for the job, so here are some tips to help you. Dress Code – You will need to arrive at your interview looking clean and well dressed, this means you are going to have to invest some money in a new wardrobe, and a suit is at the top of the list. Make sure it’s well cut and a sensible colour. You will need a few shirts as a clean shirt each day is going to be necessary. A couple of white shirts and perhaps a few striped one would be suitable, also a few ties which will coordinate with everything. Get a pair of decent shoes and remember to keep them clean, your new employer will not want to be looking down at muddy scuffed shoes, which are down at heel. A raincoat and umbrella will also be useful, you don’t want to turn up at interview looking like a drowned rat, you will immediately feel uncomfortable and it will also leave you feeling difficult and ill at ease. I cannot stress too highly the importance of your personal cleanliness. A shower each and every morning is an absolute necessity. Make sure that you don’t suffer from body odour by using your deodorant every day, carry it with you if necessary and use it. You will quickly make enemies if you have a personal hygiene problem as no one likes to have to work with someone who smells. Always make sure you shave every day, it is not acceptable to turn into work or to graduate recruitment, with dark stubble. If you have a beard keep it clean and trimmed. Also invest in a good haircut, nothing too outlandish such as being obviously coloured, keep it smart and simple. Fresh breath is a must, so clean your teeth and use a mouthwash. Probably better not to drink too much during the week as alcohol laden breath will not go down well with your new employer, nor your colleagues or clients. Save the curries and the booze for the weekend that way no one gets offended. Lastly a word of advice with regard to mobile phones. Don’t answer your phone during an interview at graduate recruitment – your interviewer will not be impressed, you should be giving 100% attention to the interview so turn it off before you go in. Once you start work get rid of the jokey ring tone, it may have impressed your mates and given a few laughs but it won’t be appreciated in job place. You are now entering the world of graduate recruitment and leaving behind all you have become used to and love, you will need to adapt quickly if you are to get that job. So start now and Good Luck !
