Recent studies have shown that more people are becoming overweight every year; this situation is now affecting children of pre-school age and is a worrying aspect. Many ways to solve this problem exist and whilst some have decided to undergo surgery, others have decided to exercise and change their dietary intake. Losing weight should be viewed as a long term health benefit and the use of weight loss drugs to help accelerate the process is not necessarily the best course of action. The drugs work by increasing the serotonin levels in the brain, making it believe that the stomach is already full, thereby, increasing the person's metabolic rate. That was all well and good until the point where more research had concluded that there was an increased risk of heart valve disease and as a consequence the drugs were withdrawn. Newer drugs were developed and started to be prescribed by physicians and dieticians, some of these drugs are currently waiting for the Federal Drug Administration go ahead. Drugs like these and their use of which has become so commonplace, that everyone basically knows a few people who have taken them. To many it is a wonder drug and let's be honest, if you could lose weight that easily without having to sacrifice anything in the process, you would take them as well. This approach has seen consumers spend millions of dollars every year and has generated huge profits for the drug companies who manufacture and sell the weight loss drug. Weight control pills can be purchased either over-the-counter or prescribed by a doctor but even with the advances in medical technology they can still cause a lot of health related problems which can be unpleasant such as diarrhea and vomiting. Other harmful side effects include tightness in the chest, urinary tract problems and stroke. An overdose of the diet pills can cause tremors, confusion, hallucinations, shallow breathing, renal failure even heart attack and convulsions. The best course of action before taking any type of pill is to consult your doctor; here are many factors that could contribute to any problems you experience and these do not necessarily stop when you cease taking the pills. These effects can be equally unpleasant as the side effects occurring as a result of taking weight control pills. Although these weight loss drugs do work, an increase in beneficial effects occurs when regular exercise is undertaken along with a change in eating habits. A diet that is full of foods such as oats, rice, cereals, potatoes, vegetables and fruits contain a good supply of vitamins, minerals and essential fiber. Of course this should always be combined with a good exercise routine which will use up excess calories and provide a good all round fitness workout. The most efficient exercise should be regular and contain a mixture of cardiovascular (walking, swimming etc.) and weight training using machines to build muscle, burn off excess calories and lose the extra pounds. Keep in mind that these types of weight loss drugs can have an addictive quality, whether they be prescribed by a doctor or non prescription. Use common sence, being skinny un-healthy and an emotional wreck is not better than being a little hefty, but healthy and feeling great!
