The Difference between Window Blinds and Window Shutters

By: Dwayne Keith

Window blinds have only come into popularity in the last quarter of a century or so. They are cheaper to produce than window shutters because they are usually made of slightly cheaper materials, and have some benefits and some disadvantages over window shutters. Window blinds are usually operated with some kind of string system that allows you to adjust the slats of the blinds. On the other hand, window shutters use a tilt bar to move the slats (called Louvers) to the desired position so that you get just the right amount of light.

Window blinds are easy to operate, and also easy to get out of the way. If you want to get your window blinds out of sight, just pull on the cord and your blinds retract up to the top, where they can be easily hidden behind your curtains. Window shutters are not so easy to hide, and as such, they are usually meant to be a part of your home décor. While your window blinds do not have to be attractive to be functional, window shutters are a part of the room, and should look attractive since they are not easy to hide. They often open to the sides, as opposed to window blinds, which open in an upward direction. While it is still possible to hide them behind the right drapery, your window shutters should be lovely enough to leave out.

Window blinds belong to more contemporary styles, and would look best in a modern living room. Window shutters, on the other hand, are somewhat more antique in feeling, and can offer a great feel to a room. The wood is often a warm shade, and can warm up a room with their interesting look. Their uncommon appearance can also be a great way to bring a little something extra to a room with a more traditional focus.

Window shutters are more expensive than window blinds, not only because of the cheaper materials that are usually used in the construction of window blinds, but also because window shutters are usually made to order. Window shutters are designed to fit your window just right, so there are no standard sizes and none of the overlapping that can often occur with window blinds, which don’t need to be exactly fitted to your window.

The biggest difference between window blinds and window shutters is really in the taste of the individual. If you want a more contemporary feel, then there is a huge range of window blinds out there for you to choose from. When you find the right window blinds, you will be just as happy with them as someone pleased with their choice of the perfect window shutters.
