The port itself was called ‘Grand Port’, when the island was named ‘Prins Maurits’ after the outstanding Prince.

Then, the Dutch brought some sugar cane plants and until now, they prosper and support a precious industry source for Mauritius. But for travelers, the true draw of sugar cane plantations is the exhibition called L’Aventure du Sucre – located within an old sugar mill and providing tastings of several special raw sugars, not to talk about homemade sugary rum that samples too. It is an instance of how history may be returned to life– in the kind of ancient sugar recipes and a little of tropical rum for swilling it down.

Mauritius is the island, which seems to take a sense of pride in remembering its origins. It try to hold history alive by preserving old traditions and conserving as much of the natural atmosphere as possible. This is a comparatively unspoilt area that has also run to conserve numerous rare species of animal and bird. The Mauritius Wildlife Fund is worldwide familiar for their defense of some species like the Aldabra giant tortoise, Green Gecko Phelsuma, and the Pink Pigeon. Such mythical animals seem like they might belong to a legend – and certainly, there is something unquestionably magical about Mauritius.
