The game of Texas Hold’em begins with a round of blind betting to build the ante, or prize pool. Each player puts an equal amount of money in the pot before the first round of cards is dealt. Once the players have placed their initial bets it’s time to play poker!

Texas Hold’em is played over four rounds of betting. In the first round each player is dealt two cards, face down on the table. These are private cards and only the player may see his or her cards. After each player receives his or her private cards the first official round of betting, known as the pre-flop round, takes place. Players choose to call, raise or fold. When a player calls this means that they place a bet that is equal to the current bet. When a player raises this means that he or she places a bet, which is higher than the current bet, upping the ante for the game. By folding a player leaves the game and gives up his or her interest in the prize pot.

In the next round, known as the flop round, three cards are placed face up on the table by the dealer. These are community cards and are shared by all of the players. After the first three community cards are dealt there is another round of betting.

In the third round an additional community card is placed face up on the table. This is known as the turn card. Players bet once again. In the fourth and final round, known as the river round, a final community card is placed on the table. Players bet a final time before the showdown in which players reveal their five card hands that they have made from private and community cards. The player with the strongest hand takes the pot.
