Teaching children to pray is one of the most important things we can do as parents. There are many other virtues to teach your children such as patience and love that will give them better control over themselves. Here are some ideas that will help. Teach your children to pray out loud. When talking about prayer with your child consider replacing the word "prayer" with the word talk. You have been using the word "talk" with your child since they first started saying words. Praying silently will come later. While you are teaching your child to pray, discuss the importance of love and patience. These two virtues keep our hearts soft and like Samuel we are able to hear the still small voice of the Lord. Our children will want to pray when they learn that they can ask for things they want and need. Teach them that the Lord is full of love for them just as you are as their parent. This will help them feel positive about their future. Love is a powerful force. Share with your child how you have nurtured and cared for them since they were born. Help them to understand that this is what the Lord has done for you as well. God is always with us and we should communicate with him often. When we pray the Lord does not always give us immediate answers. Hence, we must learn to be patient. Teaching a child patience however, can be challenging. Ever since your child was born all they had to do was cry and you or your spouse tried to satisfy their need as quickly as possible. Our children can learn to be patient when we set them a good example. When I look at the times I become impatient I see an opportunity to teach my children. When I am driving for example, I do not have to be the first guy there. You can share with your children that this is patient. You are willing to wait a little longer to arrive at your destination just like you are willing to wait on the Lord. When we teach our children to pray we also need to teach them about love and patience. God is love and will always answer our prayers. We must be patient though and be willing to wait for him to answer us.
