Talk Yourself Happy

By: Tobias Reibber

An old adage says that no one will love you until you first love yourself. That can be tricky to do, because you may not be able to see all of your own wonderful qualities. Positive reinforcement can be a powerful tool in improving your self-esteem. The easiest way to do this is through self talk exercises.

Self-talk is basically a little voice inside your head that keeps a running commentary on everything you do. The voice should be telling you that you're doing a good job, you look great, and that you're smart, friendly and likeable. If you suffer from low self-esteem that little voice is likely a critical one, reminding you of all the reasons that you fail. Low self-esteem can leave you feeling inferior to many people, in many ways.

You need to know that the nagging voice I your head is wrong. You already possess all of the qualities you need to be confident and successful. All you really need to do is keep telling yourself. You can take control of your own self talk and turn the message around. This can be a hard truth for people to realize, but it can and should be done. When you are able to convince yourself that you are capable and worthy of success, you'll find that others will believe it, too.

The self talk that you perform can shape that way that you communicate with others. That, in turn, defines how others react to you. Tell yourself that you're confident and worthy, and you'll begin to act in ways that inspire trust in other people. Demeaning self talk, on the other hand, convinces you of uncertainty and creates a lack of confidence. Others will see this, and begin to doubt your abilities.

It can be hard to face the little voice in your head, but you need to do it in order to break the vicious cycle. Hear the negative messages, and react to them by reinforcing your own positive messages. Positive self-talk is the first and most important step in improving your own self-esteem.

If you need extra help, or want to learn more about positive self-talk, there are many self-improvement books, videos and CDs available to you. Self-improvement groups and seminars are also great ways to get the information you need. Look online and in bookstores for available resources.

If you try self-improvement methods without success, consider speaking with a professional therapist or counselor. An expert in self-esteem improvement can provide the extra boost your confidence needs. Combine the strength of personal counseling with the added reinforcement of self-help tools, and you will greatly improve your chances of success.

Your time is valuable, and so are you. Don't waste another minute listening to the nagging voice in your head. Tell yourself you're better than that, and get ready to start living the life you deserve.
