Hospitals in Waco, Texas have been testing a revolutionary barcode reader system; it has been produced to help reduce common medical faults occurring inside hospitals across the world. A leader in barcode innovation and technology; IntelliDOT designed this unit. It had been announced recently that they had finished its installation of their brand new IntelliDOT Bedside Medication Administration across a network of healthcare centres across Waco, Texas. The device is will be placed beside the patients bed, the unit will run for 12 hours and power is supplied from its in built battery system The barcode system is designed to be lie at the bedside of the patient, it can retain important information about the patient and enable medical staff to easily see the personal details ,blood group and potentially medical history. Where it will make the most impact will be with regard to the prevention of over or incorrectly prescribed medication. Wireless handheld barcode scanners will be carried by the nurses and allow them to read information about the patient immediately. The intelliDOT systems will also allow the medical team to enter information into the barcode unit about the prescribed medication or patient case, the information will then synchronise with to a central server or database, which allows the information on the barcode unit to be digitally updated real time. This system alone could digitise current patient records and patient data allowing medical staff to view records of their current patients. The barcode reader technology implemented for this system is not groundbreaking, barcodes are used to retain high levels of data for some time, saying this the systems needed to manage these style systems are very clever and IntelliDOT are experts in this field and must be applauded for this innovation and research. In the UK many health services are still utilising paper filling and paper records. The national health service in the UK are still using historical systems for patient medical history and prescribing medication within hospitals and health centres across the UK, however systems like this still have a rather large cash value, so I do not expect to see such a system implemented within many government run health centres and hospitals. IntelliDOT should be praised for the idea and concept behind these barcode reader technology, for health and safety alone the systems should save lives and help to prevent medical accidents, for many medical institutions this should be worth the investment on its own. Despite the concept of such a piece of technology, unfortunately I see the vast majority of organisations putting their money in other areas before spending their finances on a system such as this.
