One of the biggest attractions of owning a new car is the car number plate. You could use your own personalized number too. But, you should also know the latest law regarding these Number Plates. In case, your number plate does not conform to legal norms, you might get fined and the police could even seize your number plate.

In Great Britain, all number plates of any vehicle must comply with The Road Vehicles Regulation, 2001. The regulation states that registration mark should belong to the vehicle owner and this number is to be displayed on acrylic number plates fixed on the vehicle. The lettering must be black on a white plate for the front end and black on yellow plate for the rear end. The number plate must conform to the relevant British standard and only official, mandatory fonts are used for lettering. Presently the mandatory font is BS AU 145d. Lettering and spacing should be of set standard as stated in the regulation. You are not allowed to alter, rearrange or misrepresent any letter or number on your car number plate.

If your car is fitted with number plates after 1st September 2001, then each character of the number plate must have a height of 79mm and a width of 50 mm. This will not be applicable for the figure '1' and the letter 'I'. The space between each character must be 11 mm and the space between groups of characters must be 33 mm. Letters and numbers must also remain in the groups as stated on the certificate of entitlement.

Moreover, car number plate must contain the name or trademark of the manufacturer or component supplier as well as the postal code of the supplier of the number plate. The number plate may include a non-reflective border as well along with Euro number and national identification letters. No other markings or materials are allowed to be used on a car number plate.

In case, your vehicle number plate do not conform to al these specifications as stated above, you might be fined up to an amount of £1,000 or your right to display the car number plate could be taken away. Your vehicle would fail in a MOT in case your vehicle has a non-standard number plate.
