Being a great photographer involves so much more than being able to just point a camera at something and hit a button. If you want to take exquisite pictures, you have to be willing to put your camera on manual and get a few tips. Many different situations call for direct knowledge of what lenses to use, what light settings to try, and sometimes even how to care for a camera in harsh climates or sandy beaches. Learning how to frame a photograph and position your subjects are things all photographers should learn. You must know what makes an intriguing composition and how to position yourself so as to weed out distracting elements in the photograph, for instance. Great composition calls for an artistic eye. A more technical knowledge is necessary to make sure the lighting for a photograph is adequate. To the amateur, using a flash sounds like the best thing in dim light, but a flash often creates glare and harsh shadows, washing out the whole picture. It can be tough, however, to judge whether you have enough natural light. The direction of a light source is important as well. For example, brilliant noon sun may seem like a great time to take a picture-plenty of light! However, the shadows and squinting are often disastrous. Lazy afternoon sunbeams, on the other hand, provide magical lighting chances. Holidays are ususual occasions for picture taking, but they are often accompanied by difficult lighting situations. Halloween involves softly lit jack o lanterns and costumed children going door to door at night. The Fourth of July features nighttime fireworks displays. Christmas offers amazing holiday displays, Christmas tree lights, and candles. Working in these situations takes a little expertise, but the results can be fabulous.
