Pharmacy Career Report 2008

Pharmacists are desperately needed to aid the growing health care sector. Salary.com states that the majority of pharmacologists earn between; $98,000-$109,000. The highest paid positions are on the west coast of the United States. The east coast US comes in second. Of all the regions, southern United States comes in last income stated at a median income of a bit over $99,000 a year. The south also had the most jobs at just over 34%.
More than 41% of pharmaceutical positions are held by professionals with a PhD, JD, or MD... Over 25% of the companies have less than 25 employees and almost 16% of the companies have more than 15,000 employees.
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, Occupational Handbook 2008-2009 there is an anticipated increase of pharmacist needed by 32%. This is a much faster than average increase in demand for all occupations.
The primary reason stated for an increase in demand, is an aging population that uses more prescription drugs and scientific advancements. This causes an increase of medications in the market. pharmaceutical companies are developing more drugs to go to market. Pharmacist are required to keep pace with these demands.
Continuing education for pharmacists is not an option. It is essential that both pharmacists and pharmacy technicians stay abreast of the new prescription . They must know the names, side effects, class and possible interactions with other drugs.
As the health insurance industry tries to find ways to cut costs, prescription drug technicians will be needed to perform more of the routine and admin responsibilities that were performed by the pharmacists.
Almost all States have regulations restricting the maximum number of technicians who can safely work under the supervision of a pharmacist at single time. Changes in these laws could directly affect job opportunities.
