The first and most likely the most frequent problem people have when training their dog is being inconsistent. People often overlook the fact that it can take a dog some time to understand even simple ideas. The truth is that they are first looking to find what place they fit in. Because dogs have a pack mentality, they will try to first establish who is the pack leader. If you don't demonstrate that you are the leader, then they will assume that position. You first need to demonstrate that you are in charge with firm and gentle consistency. They have to know their place in the family. Once that is established teaching them becomes much easier. If you stay consistent in your efforts then you will have success. Some dogs will pick things up quicker than others but you need to stick with it.. This leads to the next topic, which is being to impatient. We live in a microwave mentality society. We have to have everything immediately. When it comes to training a dog, it doesn't work that way. Otherwise you will get dissapointed and quit at potty training. You cannot have an attitude that says "this is just too hard, I just want to quit". You see, once you establish that you are in charge they will want to obey you. It is just a matter of getting your dog to understand what you want. Of course, having some treats handy is always a great way to get your dog to listen and is always a fabulous training tool. It could take a few days of effort to get your dog to understand what you are wanting them to do but the results are worth it. The last thing you must do is treat your dog as a companion. Only by working together, can you get things to work the way they need to be in the home. When you get grumpy your dog will sense it and won't respond the way they should. This always makes it harder to work with them. You need to remember to show them love. If you establish a healthy relationship at the start it will benefit you for their whole life. You have to see this as something that benefits both of you. Even though you are teaching them to fit into your environment, they will be more than ready to please you. All that you have to do is the basics such as potty training, no begging, proper behavior around people, and so on. Anything other than that is for fun. If you want to teach them some tricks then you have already built upon a solid foundation of love and trust. When it is done, you will both be better off
