Keep Your Brain In Peak Form With Exercises For Short Term Memory

By: Kyle Richey..

You know that you should exercise to keep your body fit, but did you know that you should also do some exercises for your brain to keep your brain fit? Your brain is like a muscle and it must be worked out every so often so that you can stay as sharp as possible. One of the ways you can work your brain is to do some exercises for short term memory.
Short term memory is the way that we retain information for short periods of time; things such as addresses, phone numbers, the names of casual acquaintances and so on. We tend to lose this information (thus the name short term memory) when we acquire new information rather than hanging on to all of this more or less useless information forever. Doing exercises for short term memory can increase the capacity we have for this information and the length of retention.
The Peek A Boo Picture Game
The picture game, which is a lot like the game we play with children called "peek a boo" asks you to look at a picture. It can be from a book or a magazine or any other source where the picture will stay the same. Look at it for a few seconds and then look away.
Using a pen and paper, try to write down every detail you can about that picture. Then, look at the picture again. Did you get everything right? Did you get some details wrong? By doing this over and over, you will work your short term memory and this will increase your capacity for holding information. This is a fun exercise for short term memory and it's one the entire family can play.
Audio Exercises
You'll find that you can also use sound clips to help you with your short term memory. You can use songs that you hear on the radio, or audio recordings of videos, or anything else that you can play back.
Try to remember everything you can about the clip; write the details down after the clip has played, then rewind the clip and check against what you've written down. Repeating this exercise for short term memory will also help you to remember the details of things that you hear.
These are just a couple of examples of how to exercise your short term memory. These can be practiced anywhere, anytime and the more you practice, the better your short term memory will be. That's great news for anyone who hears something and it goes in one ear and out the other. By doing exercises for short term memory, hopefully you'll be able to hold onto that information a little longer.
