Improving Your Home with Tile Roofing

By: Thomas Burrell

The roof on your home tends to be out of sight, out of mind. Despite this, it is one of the most critical elements of your home. It can raise the appeal and value of a home or take it down. A tile roof is a great way to improve things.

For years, the standard roof for most homes was some type of wood shake shingle. As the quality of homes improved and the environment changed, people started noticing wood roofs were not such a good idea.

The downsides of wood shake shingles are numerous. The two biggest are their ability to burn and the fact they are poor insulators. The downsides of having your home burn down or utility bill go through the roof made many reconsider their roofing choices.

Tile roofing has been around for years, but has become much more popular in the last 20. Why is this? Well, tile roofing provides great protection from fire and lasts for a long time considering the cost of installing such a roof.

A tile roof is unique in that it is a part and parcel system. If there is a problem with one tile, it is simply replaced without having to tear up a chunk of the roofing. It is unheard of for tile roofs to fail in mass at the tile level.

Tiles are also a great choice for roofing when it comes to maintenance. Other roofs are easily damaged by sitting water, tree limbs and so on. This is not the case with a tile roof. Even if a problem arises, the repair is usually quick and cheap.

Have you ever seen those pictures of old European cities? What kind of roofs do those old buildings have? They tend to be tile in one form or another, which is another way of saying tile roofs last. Most manufacturers will warrant them for 40 to 50 years.

Ah, but what about protecting your home? Well, tile roofs rarely burn. In fact, many communities in Southern California now require all new homes to be built with some type of tile roof. The fires that pop up every few years have taught some hard lessons.

Most homes are built with roofs that are not intended to last as long as the home. If you are in such a home and your roof is failing, a tile roof is really your best option.
