Finding Inspiration To Get Out of A Rut

By: Bruna Bacellio

Life is often best represented by the word repetition. Repetition is often very comforting, but it hardly what anybody would call inspiring. In fact, it can drain the enjoyment from your life.

Movies and books often suggest that a person in a rut has a sudden inspirational moment that changes them forever. Sorry, it doesn't really work that way for most people. Instead, it comes from recognizing you are in a routine and moving beyond it.

A moment in time. In certain eastern philosophies, it is believe the only reality is exactly now. No past. No future. Many people in a rut fail to live in the here and now. Life is whirling around you. Stop and take notice.

If there probably isn't going to be a major event to shake you up, how do you break your routine. I am glad you asked. It is all up to you, but here are some easy steps to consider taking.

1. Refuse to procrastinate.

2. Instead of being cautious, plan on saying yes to something new at least once a day.

3. Take a long, hot bath.

4. Acknowledge a moment in time. What happened yesterday or tomorrow does not matter as much as what is happening now.

5. Kiss your kids.

6. Pull out the photo albums and look through them.

7. Go see a comedian. Laughing is good for you.

8. Stop smoking. Today. Now!

9. Try a food you have never had before.

10. Go say hello to your neighbor for no reason.

11. By a Nomad Journal and use it. Review your entries every month.

12. Hold a wine tasting party.

13. Realize you can do it if you want to.

14. Write a check to yourself for some large amount and then set a goal of having that amount in some number of years.

15. Now that you are older, think about how much effort your parents put into raising you.

16. Stop worrying about what you cannot control.

17. Watch the movie "Rudy", even if you hate sports.

18. Brighten up your house or office with flowers.

19. Go to a sporting event.

As you can see, getting out of a rut is often about doing the little things. Having a giant epiphany is a pretty rare event, so focus on the things around you and enjoy.
