By: Marat Wood

Are you a very sportive person? Do you enjoy the thrill and exhilaration you can get from extreme sports? If so white water rafting is definitely a sport you should try. In fact white water rafting also has a lot to offer to people who are not searching for the thrill and exhilaration as well.

Some things you probably didn't know about white water rafting

Although white water rafting is deemed an extreme sport, it doesn't have to be so extreme if that's not what you're looking for. Lots of people also participate in white water rafting as a rather adventurous way of sightseeing!

White water rafting down the Grand Canyon for instance can provide views of the cliffs that can only be seen from the river you are rafting down.

But if it's your first time rafting there are a series of things you must know first. You will find no argument from rafters that white water rafting can be dangerous if the rafters are not properly prepared and know what they're doing.

White water rafting can be very fun and fulfilling, but it can also be dangerous. Just like any other extreme sport, no one can simply just start participating in it without the proper training and the guidance of instructors, for that reason you should do some research to find the best training sources.

If you're thinking of going on a trip any time soon, you should talk to your travel agent to find out more about the white water rafting training that exists where you're be going. And don't forget to make sure that the instructors who will be instructing you have the proper certifications.

There will be a series of things you will be taught during your training for white water rafting. Before you even get into a raft, you will be shown how to use all the gear and safety equipment.

Remember white water rafting is a team sport, so one of the very first thinks you will have to learn will be how to maneuver the raft in time with the rest of your team.

When you get in the raft, first off they will explain how to position yourself inside it, then you will be told how to use your weight when going over rapids and finally you will of course be informed of anything that you should not do when in the raft.

In terms of things not to do, one is to never lean into the middle of the raft at any time, since doing so could cause a clash of heads. Your guide will dedicate some time to explaining how to use your life jacket and other safety gear and of course what to do if you fall out of the raft.

Being able to swim properly is, as I'm sure you realize, absolutely essential in white water rafting. If your swimming is a little messy you may need to take a few lessons to get yourself up to speed.

Your trip will need some time dedicated to its planning, but having participated myself in white water rafting in the past, I can say that without any shadow of a doubt it will be well worth it, white water rafting is one of the most exciting sports I've ever participated in.
