Are You Out of Control When You Drive- How to Manage Road Rage

By: Dee Cohen

Just as water flows down easier than up, so do we often find it easier to have a reaction of anger instead of patience or understanding. When things come up with a family member that are tough or at work do you tend to blame them or look at the person with compassion?

We have knee-jerk reactions when we are angry and on edge. This makes it easy for us to fall into an unconscious reaction with others. We end up saying what we regret later and feeling mad at ourselves for being out of control.

You don't do anyone any favors when you express your anger while driving. It only makes you a hazard on the road plus it makes other people feel they also can vent and be childish. People react to the level of consciousness that is around them.

In the midst of driving if you see someone that is hitting the steering wheel, furiously honking or giving someone the finger don't feed their rage but ignore them. You don't want to antagonize someone more especially because their poor driving can impact lives. Realize that they are stuck in issues they don't have insight into and have compassion instead.

Driving can be scary if someone is aggressive and being irrational. Also make your safety the priority. When someone is in a bad attitude, don't look them right in the eyes. They will feel challenged or criticized. It is good to not try to teach someone a lesson but instead just stay peaceful inside.

It may not seem possible but through anger management techniques you can have an undisturbed state even when things seem to be bad externally. This doesn't always seem easy to do but when you even consider it , it is very liberating because it means you aren't just stuck in the usual patterns.

By learning anger control tools you not only master the current situation but many other ones. If you can be calm on a long grocery store line then you also will deal better with tension at work or a problem with a credit card etc. You will practice various exercises that you can apply and they'll be noticed by your friends as you change.

Sure you may slip a little or fall into reactions , but your intention to master yourself is the key. Often the roots and seeds are from our childhood and we have gotten stuck in old patterns. Remember these can be transcended and you can find true relief from past behaviors.
