Analysis On The Role Use Of Toys For A Child's Development

By: Gary Clay

When purchasing baby toys and children's toys a buyer's chief thought is normally the 'play value' of an item or more accurately how much fun can a youngster get from a new toy. Mum's and Dad's should toys for their children that they will enjoy and use over time. The impact that toys may have on a child's maturation and cognitive advancement is a factor that many mum's and dad's rarely consider.

Kids develop in many of ways namely; cognitive (physically), and communally (through interaction with other children and adults). A well designed kid's toy can help to encourage development and be super fun to play with. So when we visit the toy store are there any simple rules we should be considering when selecting that all important toy?

It might be considered controversial, but you can avoid the digital toys and the software run educational toys that are creeping into the toy sheds. Psychologists found that these toys are goal oriented, meaning that a youngster isn't learning to think outside the box or imaginatively in their play, and therefore their mental development is not triggered. Toys that restrict a youngster's imagination and ability to think 'out of the box' do little to assist development as they do not develop new mental strategies or methods of thinking. As all parents are aware of, the imagination of a youngster is limitless. It is the facility to work differently than an adult would which permits children to grow mentally at an amazing rate. By using a toy with a single path and single end result the youngster is not encouraged to think creatively.

In the area of mental growth, university studies indicate traditional toys are the most effective primarily because children can employ them in a multitude. That makes it possible for a wendy house to be transformed into anything that can be created within a youngster's imagination. Child physiologist Jean Piaget coined the notion of 'schemas', which means new ways of thinking. Youngsters can produce these schemas through this type of symbolic thinking.

Traditional baby toys work best to trigger the development of muscular and co-ordination skills as well. A youngster's physical development can be split into two chief categories; gross motor skills (the growth of the large muscles so we can walk, lift and carry) and the fine motor skills (these permit individuals to operate objects using our fingers and hands in a skilful and agile way). Classic, traditional toys such as sorting cages and hammering benches are great fun for young toddlers to trigger hand-eye co-ordination, whilst bicycles, trikes and scooters keep older children moving as they develop their growing muscles, strength and co-ordination.

Last of all, it's clear that the simplest toys might be the answer for social growth as well. Educational toys - ones that promote your kid's social and emotional skills - are an ideal method to ensure your little one's development. Role play toys are superb at this, permitting a kid to try new situations in a secure place and also to interact with other children to create more advanced role play situations. They permit children role play different scenarios and get a more rounded image of the environment while still maintaining a sense of security.

Below are the key factors to keep in mind when choosing your youngster's Christmas or extra special present.

1. Can the toy be used in a variety of alternative ways?
2. Is it possible for a kid adjust the purpose of the toy with his or her own thoughts and ideas?
3. Is the toy enjoyable, safety tested, well made and enticing?
4. Can the toy provide increasing zones of complexity so it can grow with the child?
5. Is the toy able to be used by a number of youngsters in a social manner?
6. Is this toy simply a fad or will it remain a part of your kid's life in a year.

No matter how fancy it looks, or how well advertised or packaged it is, the robot dinosaur will never offer your child the development of skills that the plain old pull toy offers. The spotty dog will still be taking walks even with the batteries drained on the Robo-Dino.
