6+5 Equals Positive Step Forward For Football

By: Antonio da Silva

This article gives a quick and concise rundown regarding the impending '6+5 rule' FIFA President Sepp Blatter wishes to impose in football. Without further ado, here goes.

Firstly, what is this '6+5 rule'? Basically, it means that all clubs have to include 6 domestic players when they take to the field. However, simply being born in the country does not classify them as 'domestic players.' They must be eligible or have played for that domestic team. This is a rule that Blatter wants to apply in every continent, nevertheless, Europe is shaping to be the place where it will find it difficult to be accepted due to EU laws.

Secondly, why is the rule looking to be implemented? Put simply, Blatter explains that most clubs are not nurturing domestic talent preferring to use foreign talent who are better. An example of this would be Inter Milan who has had, for a number of years, a team full of South Americans, mainly Argentineans. While they have been successful, it is a largely negative situation for the future of the Italian national team because their future players are not being given the experience of playing at the highest level regularly.

The '6+5 rule' has almost been implemented on every continent. The FIFA Congress in May assured its enforcement in all continents except Europe due to the EU's labour laws. FIFA is now looking to lobby the EU to make football an exceptional case when it comes to complying with EU legislation.

How? FIFA and its national associations will have the duty of overseeing the implementation and enforcement of the rule in their own countries.

That pretty much sums up what the '6+5 rule' implies for world football. However, changes can occur, and these will be covered in future articles. Keep an eye out for them!
