《The Second Sex》by Simone de Beauvoir which was published in 1949, was regarded as “ A book which is the most comprehensive、reasonable、and full of wisdom in the history about woman” .It is a push to the second women’s movement. The book is a summary about the movement and theory of feminist in modern times which is regarded as the “Bible” of Feminist Movement in western. It lays a foundation to the research of the modern Feminist. By taking cultural contents which covers philosophy, history, literature, biology, ancient myths and customs as background, the author elaborated the truth of women’s situation, position and right in the evolution from primitive society to the modern times and discussed the sex divergence in the development of women. 《The Second Sex》is an encyclopedia which includes the whole women’s world. The book sets off Beauvoir’s position of founder in the history of Feminist. In addition, the book builds a monument for women’s movement in the world.

The birth of this book created a furore at that time. But later it was prohibited by the government. Some people thought it was a great works but some expressed their negative opinions. The press circles argued about it. But there was more criticism than praise. After translated into English and republished in America in 1953, 《The Second Sex》attracted more attention and became the best book seller. The book deeply affected the women’s liberation movement in America. Meanwhile, this book was widely regarded as the enlightenment works in America which woke up women’s consciousness in Western.

This book contains two volumes. The first Volume is the theory frame which mainly discusses women from the women groups. It is main about the profound academic theory and covers many areas such as philosophy, history, literature, biology and ancient myth. In the second Volume, along with the development trajectory of life from childhood to old ages, ranging from all kinds women (female homosexuals, prostitutes, women in Love or mistress, Teresa, an independent woman or career women), the author discussed the individual development of women widely and concluded that: To be liberated, women should face squarely the natural differences between women and men, and build brotherhood relationship with men.

《The Second Sex》occupied a very important position in Beauvoir’s entirely creative process. It was the maturity production of Beauvoir’s ideology which was the crystallization of existentialism in this period. After《The Second Sex》published, Beauvoir’s became the forerunner of western Feminist in French people’s mind.
